Things are zooming into focus for this year. I’m almost totally booked for the school year and actually working many four day weeks with a different school each day. I’m so excited the program is spreading into Prince William and Spotsy this year. I’ve also got an opportunity to work with girls in Richmond which means we will have even more young ladies feeling confident as they move forward toward their tomorrows.
I want to share a story from one of our programs. I present a values workshop to our 4th and 5th grade girls. That means they are between 9 and 11 years old. I always take a few minutes to review our previous time together and I asked the girls if they used their values workshop skills since we’d last met. One little girl raised her hand and said that she’d recently helped a classmate make a decision using our techniques. Her friend was trying to decide if she would travel to North Carolina and spend time with her father who was there or if she wanted to just stay in Virginia with her friends during the summer. Our Girl Smarts girl proceeded to walk this young lady through the process of identifying her values. They worked out that while she values her friendships, her family is her top priority. From that it was easy to decide that spending some time with dad over the summer was the right decision.
Her story gave me goosebumps. Just the idea that this young lady was equipped with a way to sort through emotions about an issue and help someone else get to a place where they were living a values based life, makes me realize that the simple things we do in our program really make a day to day difference in our girls realities.
I’m proud of Girl Smarts and over the top proud of our girls. They are already focusing on what’s important in life. This journey is really only beginning for them and for our program.
Have a brilliant day!
